Strengths ►
- Strength; Matthew is inhumanly strong, allowing him to break the bones of his prey easily, as well as lift and throw extremely heavy objects. He’s never thought much of it, since he remembers always being abnormally strong.
- Speed; he is also faster than most humans, and uses this to catch up to prey and fellow Wendigo. He’s actually rather proud of his speed, and is willing to demonstrate how fast he is, should someone ask for proof of it.
- Silence; Matthew can be eerily silent at times, completely unmoving, not even breathing. He picked this ability up to further his chances of survival amongst humans and the other Wendigo. He has perfected his silent state to the point of being able to stand in the middle of a crowded room and be completely invisible.
- Kindness; yes, this Wendigo is kind. He stands out from the rest of his species by retaining some of his humanity, and kindness is one of the traits he remembered best. He can’t eat someone that cries because it breaks his heart, no matter who the person may be. He’s merciful to his victims, knocking them unconscious before starting to eat out of pity, rather than to avoid a headache.
Weaknesses ►
- Naïveté; Matthew’s kindness makes him very susceptible to being tricked. He won’t eat someone who cries, but he can’t tell the difference between real tears and fake tears, which leaves him at a disadvantage. He’s been known to go without meals for weeks at a time because of his tender heart.
- Clumsiness; often tripping over his own feet, Matthew’s been known to muck up his own hunts time and time again. He’s very convinced that his own center of balance is working against him, when, in all reality it’s just that he’s still growing into his body, causing him to stumble and trip often.
- Sweet tooth; Matthew is easily bought over with maple and other sugary treats. He can be lured away from Kumajirou’s protection by the offer of a maple candy, and has nearly gotten himself killed in order to try a taste of some ice cream. He once attempted to live off of maple alone, and wound up so emaciated that he wound up being fed slowly and carefully by his faithful Nanook friend.
- Sensitivity to noise; like all Wendigo, Matthew has a highly-adapted sense of hearing, and has been trained in it further by Kumajirou. Because of this, he’s able to hear the slightest noise from long distances, and pinpoint the direction it came from. However, this ability comes with an awful trade-off; he is highly sensitive to loud noises. Just a man yelling can reduce him to a whimper, and the high-pitched shriek of a woman can send him to the ground in pain. Since he’s so sensitive, Matthew himself speaks with a very soft voice.
Dreams ►
- To be human again; Matthew can still remember his human childhood very vividly, and the one thing that stays with him is how, while he may not have been remembered, people were kind to him. He longs to feel cared for again, and associates receiving kindness with being human.
- To find a home; unlike his nomadic fellow Wendigo, Matthew prefers to stay in one place and make a life for himself. Unfortunately, he cannot do this because of his peculiar eating habits, and every time he gets settled into a new home just in time to be chased out of town.
- Satisfy his hunger; while he may not be as eternally gluttonous as the others of his kind, Matthew is well aware of the twinge of hunger that is constantly in the pit of his stomach. He can satisfy it for a little bit with a good meal, but it always returns to him.
- Not to be feared; Matthew hates nothing more than realizing that everyone around him is afraid of him. He’d rather they just accept him, and not whimper every time he comes near.
Fears ►
- Being forgotten; this is so deeply embedded in Matthew’s being, that he’s willing to kill someone who forgets him, just because he wants to be remembered. He spent his time as a human being forgotten, and will always fear it happening once more.
- Losing Kumajirou; his Nanook Familiar is very special to him, considering that Kumajirou found Matthew while he was a starving and inexperienced Wendigo and helped feed him while getting him to safety. Matthew is known to go into panic attacks that lead into rages when Kumajirou is kept away from him.
- Losing control; Matthew prides himself on being able to keep a hold of most of his humanity, and of visibly looking just like a normal human. However, he knows that he has the ability to fly into horrible rages and attack people around him. The thought of losing all of his humanity terrifies Matthew, and causes him to fight hard to stay as normal as possible.
- Being captured; as much as Matthew doesn’t want to be forgotten, he doesn’t want to be captured either. Living in a cage or as a pet runs the risk of his owner trying to keep him from eating people, or of using him to seek revenge on others. Both of these options scare the Wendigo, and because of this he fights to stay free and will kill someone to keep from being captured.
Personality ► Matthew is a naturally quiet man, and a very observational one. He’s been known to sit just outside of public squares and just watch the interactions amongst people and creatures. He’s extremely soft-spoken, even when he’s attacking prey. Matthew doesn’t growl or snarl at his prey, and has never been known to raise his voice to anyone.
To most, he doesn’t seem like someone that would become a Wendigo, with his gentle attitude and quiet demeanor. He’s extremely tender-hearted and would rather starve than attack an innocent person. Matthew is very attached to his Familiar, and has been known to tear apart human polar bear hunters, despite knowing that their guns and traps wouldn’t be able to hurt the Nanook spirit. This over protectiveness is the first glance into the darker side of his personality, the part of him that he tries his hardest to keep under lock and key.
Matthew can feel the darker side of himself scratching at him sometimes. When his skin starts to itch and he looks in the mirror to see the sharp edges of his teeth, he knows the Wendigo is fighting him, trying to take over. The hunger gnaws at the pit of his stomach, and makes him irritable, while the hunting part of his brain coos at him to throw away his morals and tear into the first person he sees. It’s times like these that Matthew holes up with only Kumajirou for company and hides from humanity until the itching subsides.
Forgetting him is a serious offense, and will often end in death. Matthew does not enjoy being mistaken for someone else or having his name forgotten; it reminds him too much of being human, of being forgotten.
History ► Matthew, and his twin brother, were born in a small Canadian home to a French father and Algonquian mother. The twins were perfectly identical, from their unique hair curls to their wide violet eyes. Their parents had trouble telling the two apart, and would often call one by the other’s name by accident.
As they grew older, Matthew found himself being mistaken for his louder, smarter, friendlier brother, and gradually grew to resent the people who would forget him. The person he resented the most, though, was the only person who never forgot him; his twin brother.
However, on their twelfth birthday, something in Matthew snapped. Perhaps it was because of his mother only writing his brother’s name on the cake, or his priest fumbling Matthew’s name during the blessing, maybe even his father forgetting that Matthew deserved to hear a happy birthday as well. The most likely culprit though, would be his brother turning to him in the wood shed and saying “You know that everyone loves me more, right?”
A flash of red covered Matthew’s vision and he found the axe that he’d been holding embedded in his brother. After a moment of staring at the body, he felt a curious urge run through him, the urge to dine on the body presented before him. He fell to his knees and began eating, not looking away from the flesh until the door to the shed flew open, showing everything to his parents.
He was driven from the town that day, out into the snowy wilderness to live with the other creatures. Matthew would have been killed, but the Algonquian elders declared that it would be a sin, and that he should be forced to die in nature, like any other monster. When it seemed as though he would freeze to death, a polar bear appeared, dragging him away to its den.
Matthew was fed by the bear, gently and thoroughly throughout his beginning stages of changing from a human to a Wendigo. When he finally regained consciousness, he discovered that the polar bear was not just any creature, but a Nanook, a polar bear spirit who decided to have mercy on his young soul. Kumajirou, the spirit, became his only companion, shunned as he was by the other Wendigo for his lingering humanity.
The Nanook has trained him as well as possible, and helps to nurture his human side, sensing the great deal of guilt and kindness left in Matthew from his devouring of his own flesh and blood.
Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window…
Roleplay Sample ►
Matthew crawled away from his childhood home, feeling the cold from the snow seep into his bones. The hunger, the hunger screamed through his body, the need to consume flesh, to hunt down fellow humans and devour them echoed down to his very soul. He could still see his mother and father throwing the door to the shed open, finding Matthew sitting in a pool of blood with the remains of his brother’s body surrounding him. Could still hear the old Algonquian woman screaming at him and cursing him, calling him the forbidden word.
Wendigo. Human flesh eater. One who was once human but is no more. One who would dine upon the skin and bones of their fellow man.
The boy sobbed, curling up in a snow bank and clutching his knees to his chest. The taste of his brother’s marrow lingered on his lips and he couldn’t help but lick them, searching for more of the flavor. He truly was a monster, a beast. Something that invaded the homes of children and scared them into running to their parents’ room in the middle of the night. The scalding hot tears poured down his face, and Matthew buried himself into the snow further, praying for the cold to overcome him and make him frozen in death.
It seemed his wish was coming true as the blackness started to overcome his vision, as his body became very numb, and then very warm. Matthew felt sleepy, and started to close his eyes, pleased that his final hallucination was a giant polar bear nosing at his face.
