►► Anais - The Headstrong, Stubborn Mermaid
Nation ►
Republic of Seychelles
Human Name ►
Anais
Seeing as she's not human, she's never really felt the need for a surname.
Age ►
17
She looks a few years younger than she is, though. And since she's already young for a mermaid, she's not very amused by this.
Gender ►
Female
Species ►
Mermaid
Description ►
She's currently free so she doesn't have any bindings, but if she ever gets captured, a skilled magic user could probably enchant the ribbons she wears into them. Failing that, a string of pearls will work nicely to keep her docile.
He battered his tiny fist to feel something. Wondered what it’s like to touch and feel something.

Strengths ►
Resilience;; It's hard to bring her down and keep her that way, mostly because she's still so young that she hasn't lost the confidence and optimism that comes with youth; she can keep believing no matter what happens. She'll stubbornly keep trying to get what she wants regardless of anything that's in her way.
Water;; She's a creature of water, so to have her in an ocean, a river, or a lake is to put her in her element. She was born in a tropical ocean, so warm saltwater is where she's at her best, but water of any kind puts her at ease and makes her a little bit stronger.
Adaptability;; Because she's still so young, she's not yet set in her ways. She adapts to new situations well. Her natural curiosity helps with this - because she wants to learn about new things, she forces herself to adjust to them.
Agility;; She swims quickly, even for a mermaid, and is good at navigating tight spaces. If she were to get legs, though, she definitely wouldn't be so good on land without practice.
Weaknesses ►
Impatience;; She has a hard time waiting for things, so she tends to rush into things before she's prepared to deal with them. It gets her in trouble a lot.
Youth;; She's still so young that not only are there a lot of things she doesn't understand, there are also a lot of things she simply can't do. For example, her magical abilities - sans being able to breathe underwater and speak with fish - are sorely underdeveloped.
Stubborn;; It's really difficult to make her change her mind - which wouldn't be an issue if she actually put thought into her decisions. The fact is, though, she doesn't. She makes split-second decisions and stands by them.
Impulsive;; She does things without really thinking them through, just based on how they "feel" to her.
Temper;; She gets angry easily - really easily - and often says things she doesn't mean. She also holds grudges far more often than is healthy.
Childishness;; Did I mention she's a brat? Because she is. She's never really had to grow up, so she essentially acts like a big kid all the time.
Dependence;; She likes to act like she can take care of herself, but the truth is, she can't. She needs people to bail her out because she rarely knows enough about a situation to navigate it properly.
Literacy;; She can't actually read. Sunken books don't normally last so long and she's lived her whole life in the water, so she never really had the chance to learn.
Dreams ►
Growing legs;; She'd like to be able to walk on land someday. A pair of legs is something she's longed for for a long time, though she doesn't really like the idea of giving up undersea life for them.
Making friends;; In addition to befriending as many marine creatures as she can, she'd also like to get to know land-dwellers and see if they're really as scary as they're made out to be.
Water magic;; She wants to learn how to use it... without, of course, having to put forth the effort of hard work.
Exploration;; She wants to explore every single bit of underwater territory in the world. Because she's crazy like that.
Fears ►
Fishermen's nets;; They keep taking away her fishy friends! Also, they're hard to get out of when she gets caught.
Being eaten;; For some reason, humans seem to think that eating mermaids will make them immortal. She does not like the idea of this at all.
Falling in love;; She's heard stories about mermaids who have fallen in love and ended up dying for it - she doesn't want to go that route at all. Ever.
Being captured;; Aside from dying, the worst thing ever would be to be caught and get stuck as some human's plaything.
Personality ►
In all honesty, Anais is not the kind of person you should be around if you're looking for something simple. While it's true that she can be pretty simplistic at times, she's hotheaded and jumps to conclusions often enough to give even the most patient of souls a major headache. She holds grudges with a childish sort of passion, generally labeling someone she doesn't like with an unflattering nickname and insisting on calling that rather than their real name until she gets over whatever it was that made her mad in the first place. She also hates being told what to do and will often deliberately do the exact opposite of what she's ordered.
She's not all bad, though. Underneath the temper tantrums and authority issues, she's a bright and curious young mermaid who just wants to figure out what the world around her - and above her - has to offer. She honestly likes getting to know others (though most of her friends thus far have been fish, as she's never really related well to most merfolk) and would greatly enjoy becoming familiar with humans - she just isn't really sure how to make friends without risking someone trying to eat her for immortality. She's also not really sure what she'd say even if she did manage to befriend someone.
She dislikes the feeling of not having anything to do and has thus come up with a wide variety of activities to keep herself occupied, from exploring the underwater caves to seeing how much she can flirt with danger before something such as a shark fights back. She also thinks it's funny to play around with sailors - making them think there's a big fish swimming around or frightening them by appearing as a "sea-demon" are some of her favorite pasttimes. She's mischievous, just as her more rowdy siren cousins are, and loves to play pranks.
She does have trouble committing to something for more than a few weeks at a time, and this flighty nature is probably to blame for quite a bit of the trouble she's managed to land herself in during the past seventeen years. Of course, being seventeen probably doesn't do anything to help - being much younger than most of her kind, she feels like they don't really understand the way she thinks and feels, which is why she frequently goes against the "just stay underwater where it's safe" rule to get to know the world above the waves.
Most of all, though, she's growing. She's an adolescent mermaid, which means there's plenty of room for her to mature... if, of course, she's not perpetually left to her own devices. The more time she spends on her own, the more reckless and childish she gets; other people serve to keep her "grounded," so to speak, and also help bail her out of trouble, no matter how much she insists that she can take care of herself.
History ►
As far as lives go, for a mermaid, hers has been rather unremarkable. Anais was raised by her mother's father, seeing as both of her parents were just as flighty as she is (right now they're probably on the other side of the world making friends with whales or something), and has always been taught that the only really safe place for their kind is far beneath the waves. In spite of this, she's always been interested in the surface - though she quickly developed an intense dislike for seagulls, because they simply "wouldn't shut up" whenever she'd poke her head above the water.
Most of the merfolk she grew up with, then, were her grandfather's age or her parents' age. Rather than try to understand the "boring adults," she took to befriending the fish that lived in and around her home, growing closer to them than she was with her grandfather. She also took to following the rivers inland to see what was out there, and was surprised to find that there were people just like her that walked around on land - only they had these strange things called legs instead of fins.
At first, she thought legs were kind of ugly. Who would want two skinny little stick-things when they could have a beautiful tail with shimmering scales? But the more she saw them, the more fascinated she became by their way of life. With legs, the strange upright creatures - humans, her grandfather said they were called - could do things like run and dance. And their food - it was much more appetizing than anything she'd eaten underwater. Just the smells were enough to make her mouth water.
Of course, being a child, she wasn't free to just do whatever she wanted. Whenever she would stray too close to the shore or risk being caught by a human, her grandfather or one of his close friends would bring her back home. However, now that she's seventeen, she's planning to strike out on her own. She wants to see what's waiting out there - if there's anything waiting out there - for someone like her.
Her first order of business is going to be to find some way to get a pair of legs. She's heard tales of mermaids who have managed it; she figures it's only a matter of time. In the meantime, she wants to see if there's any way to get to know the land-dwellers while she stays in the water.
Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window…
Roleplay Sample ►
Spotting planes on the horizon - planes with markings that were not Dutch, planes coming from another direction entirely - brought relief to Seychelles. There was only so much ground troops could do, but if Belgium had more aid coming from the air things might be alright. The thought that they might be allies of the Netherlands didn't even cross her mind, mostly because she was so pissed off at him right now she couldn't see why anyone else would help him with this. Most of Europe had already been annoyed with him after Finland, anyway...
That relief evaporated quickly when a burst of fire from one of the French planes caught the tip of her plane's wing, and she realized with a pounding heart that for all intents and purposes, she looked like a Dutch pilot. Sure, she'd been firing on the other planes, but not every pilot would have seen it.
"Son of a bitch," She swore under her breath, knowing that such language was very unladylike and that it would have earned her a stern talking-to if her boss or one of her former caretakers had heard it. She didn't care. It helped her let off some steam, and that was what she needed before she fired back on the new planes in retaliation. They couldn't have known she wasn't Dutch.
They needed to know, though, before she got shot out of the sky. There was already enough of a risk of that now that she'd fired on other Dutch planes; she didn't need it coming from all sides. Gritting her teeth, she reached over to fiddle with the radio dial. Maybe she could broadcast to the newcomers...
"Hey! Would whatever idiot that just damaged my wing cut it out?! In case you hadn't noticed, I'm attacking the Dutch too! C'est de conneries..."
...maybe not the most diplomatic of messages, but it certainly got her irritation across. Moments later she fired another burst into one of the Dutch planes, figuring that would serve as a good mark as to who had just been speaking. She just had to hope that the others could identify which plane was hers so they didn't fire on her again.
This wasn't at all as simple as she'd hoped it would be. They needed to take out the Dutch forces, and fast. They'd already done enough damage.

Favorite Pairings ►
I don't really ship Seychelles with many people (seriously, she's way too immature for an actual relationship, guys), but Iceland/Seychelles and Hong Kong/Seychelles are cute. I'm open to most pairings with her, though, except for France/Seychelles because I can't help but see it as a parent-and-child relationship. Sorry. ;; My ultimate Seychelles ship? Somalia/Seychelles, but only in nationverses where they have that piracy vs law enforcement thing going on. XD
I love most other pairings, though. World x world is my FAVORITE. More specifically, I love Bad Friends Trio/Romano, Bad Friends Threesome, Spain/Romano, Prussia/Romano, France/Romano (...yeah Roma's kind of my headcanon bicycle), Prussia/Canada, Prussia/Hungary, Austria/Hungary, Germany/France, Germany/Italy, Poland/Lithuania, China/Korea, America/Belarus, Norway/Belgium, Norway/Denmark, England/America, England/France, England/Spain, Russia/America, um, well, pretty much anything as long as you can make it interesting. I've never really been able to get behind Belarus/Russia or China/Japan, though.
Also, my favorite ice cream flavor is strawberry cheesecake~!
