The soji door to the garden was glowing a pale blue when Kiku finally took his eyes from the screen of his laptop. It didn't feel at all like it had taken all night -- It had only been half-past-eleven when he started reading the online manga -- but the morning had already found him, and he could hear Pochi padding around in the hall, waiting for fresh water and a trip outside.
Kiku blinked thickly and looked around the room. It was a mess that he didn't favour at all; an empty ice-cream carton lay beside his futon mattress, a spoon resting inside. The cup he was drinking tea from was balanced on a small stack of walk-through magazines he'd picked up when he bought the ice-cream and a few bags of potato chips. Those were scattered among the snack nest, some opened and some untouched, with one spilt on its side. His laptop, dangerously warm, rested on the pillow where his head should have been. The thick, white duvet was tossed in a half-circle behind him, shaken off when it proved unnecessary.
"Pochi... Pochi," he called weakly, drumming his fingers on the tatami mat to attract the dog into the room. When would he sleep? More importantly, when would he get up and start his chores? All-nighters were definitely not a regular occurence for Kiku, but he'd made the mistake before.
Pochi stepped into the room, his nose to the floor all the time. To prevent the dog from finding and eating the leftover ice-cream or chips Kiku rose from his futon and scooped up the dog.
"How early is it?" He mused quietly both to himself and Pochi, who licked at his owner's wrist affectionately. Though when they reached the front soji door and Kiku slid it open, he sighed heavily and groaned as he set the dog down. Pochi stepped out into the darkness of midnight, toeing around the porch for a moment before slipping back into the house, uninterested in going out at night.
It wasn't morning at all.
Irritated, Kiku shut the door and turned on his heel, back into his bedroom where he slid open the soji door that led to the garden. The pale blue light? The new solar-powered garden lanterns he'd bought a week ago.
With a huff, the Japanese man stepped off the porch and onto the cold grass, intent on pulling up every one of the eerie lanterns and disposing of them before returning to bed.
